7 TIPS FOR TRAVELING TO KENYA
ARE YOU PLANNING A TRIP TO KENYA?
Interested in traveling to Kenya? Does the thought of visiting seem both exciting and overwhelming? There's so much to see, do and know that you don't know where or how to begin. We have compiled a list of tips for New Travelers to Kenya that will help you get moving in the right direction.
Pack a towel and washcloth: When traveling overseas, you should pack a quick drying towel and washcloth. All hotels do NOT provide these items. So, you should be prepared in the event that your hotel does not have a towel and or washcloth in your room.
Use a voltage converter: Kenya uses 240V instead of the 110V used in the United States. As a result, small electronic devices can be ruined if precautions are not met. With the exception of cellphones and computers, it is best practice to use a voltage converter.
Always Negotiate: Negotiating is like an art form in Kenya. Most shopkeepers and drivers expect to haggle over the amount offered to customers.
Pack a travel adapter plug: Electrical outlets in Kenya use 3 prongs instead of 2. You will find that your cell phone and laptop cannot be charged. However, a travel adapter plug is a quick fix to that problem.
Phone Service: There are 2 major phone service providers in Kenya. If you have an unlocked cellphone that uses a sim card, you can get service through Safaricom or Airtel. The service is prepaid. So, there isn't a long term commitment.
Use Local Currency: If you use a credit or debit card while traveling, the option to use your "home" currency will be offered. Choose the local currency instead. The reason is that you will be charged an invisible fee when using a cash machine abroad if you choose your home currency.
Best Times to Visit: The rainy seasons in Kenya are from March to early June then again from late October to early December. So, the best times to visit are from June to October and from January to February.
